From Manhattan to Queens
The hospital’s history dates back to the 19th century, when one of the latest medical advancements was the discovery of X-ray technology. Established in 1892 in a Manhattan house, the hospital began as a shelter for unwed mothers known as the Rescue Home for Women, managed by the Salvation Army, an evangelical Christian organization.
During World War I, the facility opened free medical services for dependents of servicemen. After the war, it was renamed Booth Memorial Hospital. In the 1950s, after World War II, the hospital relocated to Queens as the Salvation Army identified a shortage of general hospitals in the vast agricultural communities east of the East River.
The new hospital in Flushing was built on a shrub-covered lot and opened in February 1957. It housed 210 adult beds and 45 pediatric beds, with a 35-bed ward for elderly patients. Another wing included the Perkins Pavilion, dedicated to unwed mothers.
Change in Management and Name
The Salvation Army laid a strong foundation for serving people and caring for the sick, with a patient-centered approach that distinguished the hospital from others. In the early 1990s, the Salvation Army withdrew from managing emergency hospitals in the U.S. to focus on other charitable efforts.
In 1992, the hospital became an affiliate of NewYork-Presbyterian. A year later, it was renamed New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, though for convenience, residents referred to it as NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. A major modernization project in 1999 added 200 beds, with another significant expansion completed in 2006.
World-Class Services
The hospital supports community medical centers and practices throughout Queens, offering world-class services across nearly all medical specialties. Common patient needs include oncology, gastrointestinal, cardiac, dermatological, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), neurological, diabetic, spinal, mental health, women’s health, vascular care, as well as organ transplantation, rehabilitation, surgery, and more.

NewYork-Presbyterian Queens is an innovative institution providing both in-person and virtual care. Its telemedicine services enable patients to access expert care from home, utilizing the latest digital technologies. Patients can consult specialists remotely, ensuring quality care without visiting the hospital.
The hospital also serves as a teaching facility, providing education for future medical professionals. Students gain clinical experience under the direct or indirect supervision of senior physicians. The goal of this program is to create an environment where aspiring doctors acquire necessary skills in a safe setting, guided by experienced professionals.
