Founded in New Jersey
In 1929, aviation visionary Charles S. (Casey) Jones anticipated the critical demand for professionals to plan, produce and overhaul airplanes and engines. In 1932, the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics was opened in Newark, New Jersey. Eight years later, it moved to NYC, to the East Elmhurst neighborhood, immediately following the establishment of LaGuardia Airport. The airport’s namesake, Mayor F. La Guardia, envisioned the flight school as a way to cultivate youth in aviation technology.
Throughout World War II, the 20,000 men and women schooled at the campus aided the nation’s victorious air force. After the war, the Casey Jones School was merged with the Academy of Aeronautics and focused again on civil aviation. In 1986, VCAT advanced to college status. In 10 years, 9 additional graduate courses were implemented. Thus, the school offered Bachelor of Science degrees.
In 2004, VCAT was named in honor of American fighter pilot George A. Vaughn Jr. He further played a role in VCAT’s formation in 1932. In 2007, VCAT began offering further studies in airport management. At the same time, it became the first university in NY to provide a degree in mechatronics engineering. A mechatronics engineer is a specialist who works in the field of science and technology and understands mechanics. Their work is aimed at creating and operating machines and entire systems with computer control and motion. A mechatronics engineer should have a good understanding of microprocessor technology, computer science, electronics, precision mechanics, computer control of mechanisms and moving machines. In the same year, VCAT opened a dormitory for 200 people.
In 2014, VCAT opened a new aviation training facility in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens. In 2020, VCAT was named one of the top regional colleges in the northern U.S. (according to U.S. News and World Report). Furthermore, the New York Times stated that out of 2,137 colleges nationwide, VCAT came in first for upward mobility (UM). UM measures the frequency with which a person changes their socioeconomic status, such as moving up the career ladder. Great UM is a sign of a thriving economy.

Educational programs
VCAT confers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, technology, aviation and management. VCAT works closely with many airports and airlines and is even located near many of them.
Before receiving a bachelor’s degree from VCAT, you need to undertake a practicum in your specialty. Many learners find their first job this way. In particular, many of them are employed at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, both located in Queens. An associate’s degree is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree.
VCAT’s management courses equip learners for junior to mid-management roles in SMEs and airports. The subject of airport management is a distinct discipline, rooted in general business but concentrated in the high-tech world of aviation and transportation. Learners in the airport management major explore topics such as wildlife hazards, ecosystem management, airfield security and emergency preparedness and response.
The Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares learners to work in computer-aided design and aeronautical options, as well as computer-aided design and animated graphics. It is also the only college in the city to boast a Mechatronics engineering program. It is a scientific and technical discipline that blends mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. Learners may opt to finish an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in aircraft operations that does not contain a flight component. They can also pursue careers in aviation-related government bodies. Ground-based credentials allow you to build a career in professions such as ground instructor, flight controller, accident investigator, aviation administrator and aviation researcher. VCAT also runs a non-degree air traffic control course for those who wish to embark on a career in the aviation industry.
